As probably you already know, even if travelling is my biggest passion and I love to be always on the road, I like to live my city as well, exploring it and discovering surprising places everyday.

So, when I came across Bitemojo I was very excited to test it, and I had the opportunity to live Rome on a different point of view, joining the culinary aspect of the city together with the cultural side.

About Bitemojo App

Bitemojo App offers alternative food tours and makes you live the experience of a city in a completely independent way, with no guide and no group, just with your smartphone.

For now, the app works in 5 cities: Rome, Berlin, Barcelona, Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv. So, if you’re travelling in one of them, you can download the Bitemojo App, choose between different tours and book your favourite one in the website or directly on the app.

Once you have bought your tour, the next step is to download it; it includes the map of your route, dotted with all the 6 bites included (restaurants or bars where you can taste some delicious typical food) and all the interesting places near around.

During the tour you’ll need your smartphone and an internet connection, nothing more.

Bitemojo works with a “bite credits” system: you will earn virtual coins reviewing, sharing your experience, or suggesting it; this allows you to collect coins and claim new bites for your next trip.

My experience

Bitemojo offers in Rome 2 different tours: the “Food Tour of Trastevere” and the “Food Tour from Campo de’ Fiori to Jewish Quarter”.

I took the the second one, and it was pretty good, even if I think that some points need to be improved.

Let’s take a look to the pros and the cons of my experience.

The pros

Bites are made by local typical food, and this is a plus. I had the chance to taste “Pastrami”, a typical Jewish food I’ve never eaten before. I discovered a very cool Tiramisù place too, where they serve this delicious Italian dessert in many different formats and you will be witness of the preparation too. (Do you think I’m going to keep this place secret? Of course not! It’s ZUM).

The app suggests several places of interest in your route, and these places are usually not so touristic. This is another advantage of the Bitemojo tour. In my case, for instance, the app did not recommend Campo de’ Fiori Square (I imagine because it is very famous and you’ll surely read about it in a book guide during your trip), but I had the opportunity to discover Passetto del Biscione, an interesting place I didn’t know in Rome.

The cons

The app needs to be improved in some aspects, just to let the experience be perfect. The map, for instance, sometimes is not accurate. And, even if Bitemojo App is available in many languages, the translations could be better.

The “Pastrami” I tasted in the Jewish Quarter

It could happen that a certain bite is unavailable, because the restaurant is closed that day. This is something you’ll discover only when you’ll start your tour, just like happened to me: unfortunately I couldn’t enjoy the juicy Carciofo alla Giuda (Judean Artichoke) planned in my tour. But the app gives you the possibility to convert the bite into bite credits to be used in your next trip.

Conclusion

I honestly think that Bitemojo App is a very original way to explore a city and its culinary traditions. The app allows you to be independent and to take your time during the tour, and I think this is a great advantage when travelling. You can even stop the tour and continue in another day or in another city.

Furthermore, this is quite cheap to be such a well-structured tour and to include the food in the price.

If you’re planning to travel to Rome, Barcelona, Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv or Berlin, you should definitely give it a chance! 🙂
