The Boyana Church is famous for its frescos, part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1979.

It’s in a Sofia’s suburb, just on the slope of Vitosha Mountain and, even if it’s quite difficult to reach, it’s worth a visit.

How to reach Boyana from Sofia city centre

Reaching Boyana from the centre of Sofia there are several options.

I suggest you to take the tram number 5 from Alabin Street, just on the Palace of Justice’s side, until the stop in Boulevard Tsar III – when it crosses Boulevard Aleksandar S. Pushkin.

There, a few meters away – at the bus stop in Pushkin Boulevard – take the bus 107 to the last stop, right next to the park that hosts the Boyana Church.

If you prefer a faster – but definetely not cheaper – option, you can take a taxi from the city centre for 5-10 Euros.

Visiting the Church

From the outside, the Church looks like a small house in the wood: country and simple, it gives you a very characteristic image.

Once you cross the tiny entrance door, the agic happens: the interior walls of the Church are completely covered by extraordinary frescos, made since 1259 and restored several times over the years.

If you want to have more details about the artistic importance and the history of Boyana Church, you should take a look at this short but very explicative video.

The visit of the Church presents some peculiarity:

  • Due to the small size, may enter only 8 or 10 people at a time (so, depending on how many people are there, you may have to wait quite a while);
  • The visit time is limited to a maximum of ten minutes (more than enough – in my opinion – for such a small place);
  • It is absolutely forbidden to take pictures (an operator wil be very committed to ensure that you don’t break this rule).
