Among the various things to do in the Slovak capital, Bratislava Castles are definitely full of charm. One is located in the city, the other few kilometers away but still easily accessible, and both are a symbol of history and tradition.

Bratislava Castle

The Bratislava Castle is the symbol of the city, reproduced on the coins of Castello10, 20 and 50 cents. Set on a hill, it’s visible from every point of the city and offers a full and lovely view of Bratislava. Inside there’s the collections of the Slovak National Museum, a collection of over three thousand paintings, statues and even foreign prints, grouped by subject. In the Castle there’s also the Museum of Music, and it hosts periodically and temporary exhibitions.

To reach the castle you can decide to have a walk from the old town or to take bus 203 or 207 from the city centre.

It is closed on Monday, from Tuesday to Sunday you can visit between 9 am and 5 pm, paying the full price of 2 Euros, or the reduced ticket of € 1.33 reserved for children and students. For more information you should visit the official website.

Devin Castle

The Devin Castle is located 10 kilometers from Bratislava, but is easily reached by taking the bus 29 from the stop under the Novy most (New Bridge).

DevinThe Castle, one of the oldest of Slovakia, is a fortress perched on a hill. The middle castle and the caves are used as exhibition space for permanent and seasonal exhibitions that tell the story of the excavations of the castle showing the objects found. The outside area is very impressive, offering a walk among the ancient ruins of the castle; you can see the Maiden’s Tower, the protagonist of a legend that say that many young women, prisoners in the tower for decision of their parents, preferred to jump from the tower rather than live without love.

The landscape you can admire from the Castle is wonderful: on one side you can admire the roofs of the west part of the town, on the other side the beauty of the river.

If you have few days to spend in Bratislava, you should visit these two Castles, not only because they represente the history and the culture of the Country, but also because they offer an overview of the place really amazing.
