Cordoba is a city that, in my opinion, deserves a visit at least once in your lifetime. It reflects the authentic Andalusian style, it’s a not too big city, perfect to be explored by foot in one day.

So, from my experience, I’ll give you some tips on what is worth to do and see if you decide to visit Cordoba in a day.

The Great Mosque of Cordoba

One of the greatest example of Muslim art in Spain. Entering for the first time in this huge building and walking among its typical columns – I have to be honest – it’s very evocative.

Nowadays, it mixes Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. After the Spanish reconquer of the city, it was “converted” in a cathedral, that’s still operative.

Although – I think – this transformation has deprived the mosque of much of its charm, it is an extraordinary monument, undoubtedly the main attraction in Cordoba.

Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

The garden occupies three terraces and is simply marvelous. The building has changed its role over time: it was the royal residence of the Christian Monarchs, then the site of the Courts of the Holy Offices, a civil prison, and finally a military prison.

It certainly worth a visit!

A walk in the Judería

The Judería is the Jewish district of Cordoba, where Jewish people used to live until their expulsion from the city in the fifteenth century. It’s one of the most beautiful areas in the city, with alleyways, narrow streets and historuc buildings.

In this district there are two important places you should visit:

The Synagogue

Is the only one in Andalusia and one of the three in the whole Spain. This place dates back to the fourteenth century and preserves its Mudejar style decorations, floral stucco and several Jewish writings.

Closed on Mondays, you can visit it from Tuesday to Saturday from 9 to 20:30 and on Sundays and religious holidays from 9 to 15:30; the admission is free.

Callejon de las Flores

It’s a long, narrow street, with dozens and dozens of flower pots on the buildings’ walls. It has become, over time, a very popular place. It’s very charming, and it worth a glance if you visit Cordoba in a day.

The Roman Bridge

Built in the Augustus period as part of the via Augusta, this bridge on the Guadalquivir river is 240 meters long and rests on 16 arches. It connects the city to the Calahorra, an Arab fortress that nowadays hosts the Museum of the Three Cultures, where the story of the coexistence of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim culture in Cordoba in the Middle Ages is shown.

A walk in the city center

Walking in the center of Cordoba, you will come across some typical spots, where you should stop for a moment to admire:

Plaza de las Tendillas

Ancient Roman forum, today is the heart of the city, surrounded by the major avenues and commercial activities. At the center of the square stands “El Gran Capitan”, a statue made in 1920 by Matthew Inurra Lainosa, a sculptor from Cordoba.

Plaza de la Corredera

It’s the main square in Cordoba, and is the only one in Andalusia to have a rectangular shape. To admire its beautiful colors I recommend you to take a sit in one of the many bars and enjoy some tapas sipping a cool beer or a tinto con limón.

Plaza de Capuchinos

It’s a small and white square, incredibly simple. In the center of it, there’s the Cristo de los Faroles (Christ of the lanterns), which takes its name from the eight lanterns around the crucifix. This is also a very photogenic place, and you can’t avoid a stop there if you want to visit Cordoba in a day.

Cordoba is a very special city. It collects different styles under an Andalusian aura. It’s Colorful, pleasant, alive.

It’s a city that let you explore it in a relaxed rythm, and it can surprise you with small, unexpected details.

I suggest you to avoid a visit during the summer because, as in the entire south of Spain, the temperature is very very high 🙂
