Even if Milan is not a large city, it’s pretty famous to be chaotic and with a lot of traffic. For this reason I was pleasantly surprised to see (and to experience) how efficient public transport is; in addition to offering a fast service, it offers a very simple experience that makes moving around Milan almost a pleasure.

TICKETS

There are different types of tickets for moving around Milan. The single ticket is valid for 90 minutes from the validation and costs 1.50 euros, but there is also the the daily ticket option (4.50 euros, valid for 24 hours) and the two-days ticket (8.25 Euro, valid for 48 hours). Otherwise you can choose RicaricaMi, an electronic pass to be gradually loaded (I personally recommend you this option only if you frequently visit Milan).

You can buy tickets at the metro station machines, the newsstand or tobacco shop around the city.

To be better oriented in the Milan public transport network, to calculate the route or to find the line you need, you can use the GiroMilano website, or download the official ATM app, that’s very useful.

BUS, TROLLEYBUS AND TRAM

The entire urban and suburban area in Milan is covered by a very big transport network: 110 bus lines, 18 trams and 4 trolley buses.

They follow a schedule, which varies according to the season (in July and August the rides are reduced) and the days of the week (weekdays, Saturdays and holidays have a different timetable).

If you want more detailed information, you can take a look at the timetable on the ATM website.

METRO

In Milan the underground network is quite large for such a small city and, in my opinion, it’s the best way for moving around Milan. There are four metro lines: the red one, the green one, the yellow and the purple one.

The metro service starts at 5.30 am and continues until 12.30 am, except for the purple line, which is active from 5.40 am to 12 am.

NIGHT LINES

Milan doesn’t sleep during the night! 🙂 Public transport – even if on a smaller scale – works very well at night too.

Moving around Milan at night is quite simple, and you can use – in addition to regular tickets – a single ticket that, if validated after 12 am and before 4.30 am, is valid for the whole night (up to 6 am) . With just a single ticket, you can move around the city all night long.

SHARED MEANS OF TRANSPORT

An alternative method for moving around Milan (very appreciated in this city) is to share means of transport. In Milan there are three different options: bike sharing, car sharing and scooter sharing.

Bike sharing is the collective use of bicycles, and in Milan there are two ways of using it: the “free” rental, which allows you to leave the bike anywhere in a specific area (Mobike and Ofo are the main companies), and “station” rental, which includes fixed stations where you can pick up your bike and put it back at the end of the rental (BikeMi).

Car sharing in Milan is very common, and there are many companies that offer this service. Again, there are cars to be picked up at any point (Car2go, Enjoy, DriveNow, Share’Ngo) and “station-based”cars (Guidami-Ubeeqo, E-Vai).

Scooter sharing is a little less common in Milan, but it’s still a good option for moving quickly around the city. At the moment only MiMoto’s service is available: there’re electric scooters with two helmets each, to be picked up and stored at any point within a specific area of the city.

As you can see, moving around Milan is quite simple: means of transport (public or not) are very well organised and they allow you to move around the city and easily reach any destination.
